This is a question I’ve now been asked a few times by a few photographers starting out and my answer is usually always the same. Yes & No.
How can it be both? It can be both because there are various factors to consider.
YES:
- The more experienced models usually know how to pose and work with photographers thus make your shooting life easier.
- Experienced models know what they can and cannot pull off, as far as styles are concerned.
- There are various experienced models who understand the concept of lighting. So they are able to guide you into achieving the kind of look you may want to pull of.
- Some models are just plain old fashioned HOT. And can’t take a “bad” photo.
NO:
- If you’re still learning photography then your images may still not be as great as you expect them to be, regardless of a models experience.
I can relate to the NO statement. Before I knew anything about low light shots, I once had a model laying on a woolly carpet, in her lingerie. And I “attempted” some of those dark, low light images. It was a disaster, as I had NO clue about camera settings or lighting techniques to achieve the shot.
Now this is not to say that all models are the same. There are some models who may be complete beginners as far as modelling is concerned but have a boat load of confidence. And confidence shines bright in some photos.

I’ve worked with beginner models who weren’t very confident in front of the camera. And when I reviewed the results it was definitely visible. Then I’ve worked with models who had tons of confidence and again, it showed in the final images.
If I were to offer any form of advice it would be, if you’re starting out, try working with a few professional and experienced models first.
You’ll find that most experienced models will be happy to work with and help photographers starting out. (Be aware that most professional models expect to be paid for their time.) They are open to ideas and chances are, the look you are hoping to achieve, they have already done.
Don’t be scared to make contact with professional models. Especially through Portfolio Hosting websites. Most of them don’t bite and the 2 worst things that can happen is they may not reply or might just decline.
What’s your take on this post? Does the experience of the model or the photographer play the more important role in getting a great shot?
